part of my daily bike commute (a measly 1.4 miles each way) involves rolling east on a 4 lane-street. those few blocks are extremely stressful, due to lack of a bike lane. with no marked lane for me to ride in, i either have to take the lane (in accordance with California Vehicle Code 21202) and piss off cars driving behind me, or play to my meek non-confrontational side, focus all my energy on not steering into the curb, and ride in the gutter through the glass, grit, and litter.

i usually choose the latter, try to keep the peace, and get scared out of my mind with drivers who share my lane and roar past so close i can reach out and touch them. it’s distressing that california (is working toward, but) has yet to enact a 3-foot passing law, unlike 10 other states. on the way home one day, i tested out riding in the middle of the right lane with uncomfortable (though not unexpected results).

the first block or so was uneventful. halfway through the second i heard an engine gunning and suddenly a red jeep cherokee was at my side, less than a foot from my handlebars. it zoomed by, taking up half my lane and half of the left lane. shaking, i swerved as far to the right as a i could and then i noticed that there were KIDS in the car. no, not dirty punk rockers or stoked surfer dudes. these were impressionable 9 or 10 year olds, and their dad was at the wheel.

i caught up to them at the light (luckily their windows were open) and asked politely, “could you maybe give me a little more room next time?” the dad responded, “well you were taking up the whole lane!” i’m not particularly glib under pressure or post-near-death-experience, so the best justification i could come up with was, “does that mean you have to?”

not an entirely sensical nor fiery retort. next time i’ll be sure to include these in my knee-jerk responses script:

• “so what, you get to take up two lanes?”
• “way to show your kids how to attempt manslaughter!”
• “i had every right to be where i was…” (followed by a ninja-star toss of a notecard detailing my rights as a bicyclist into the car. it self-destructs in 20 seconds, just enough time for me to flee and for them to find/read it.)

online registration ends tomorrow! as of 1pm wednesday august 13th, there are only 10 ladies racing with me in the brentwood grand prix’s 10:40am category 4 womens…so come challenge me for the last place medal! ok, ok, technically they’re only “placing” the top 6, but a girl can dream, right?

this electra cruiser customized by edgy fashion designer petro zillia is $500 retail…though i think the scarcity of these beauts jacked up the price a few notches. i saw one on ebay a few months ago with the reserve price of $1600! but the lucky frugal femmes of schnectady, ny can score one for just $800 off craigslist.
